  TIPS.
Visas: Tourist. Short Stay Visa - 3 months or less. Long Stay Visa - up to 6 months. Visas are valid for one year and allow multiple entry. Special 4 year visas are available for a fee. The Visa application fee of AUD60 is not refundable. Extensions are possible, apply to the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA). A sponsor is not required,
New Zealand passport holders can get Visa on arrival.

But if you are a citizen of a country the government lists as "unlikely to return" e.g. australia, Laos, Cambodia you will find it difficult to get a visa, you will need a sponsor in Australia, and a profile that says you probably will return i.e. have money, a job, married, own property etc. and maybe a personal interview at the Embassy in your country. If the first application is refused, hassle the Embassy, ask why, make another application. This "special" treatment of certain countries is unfair and appears racist, fight it.

Student Visas: for full-time study, available with conditions & guidelines. Easier to get if you are from a "Gazetted" country e.g. in Asia region - Brunei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and Singapore.
Business Visas:Up to 3 months is AUD60. Long Stay (3 months-4 years) AUD150 and sponsorship required with fees (AUD3105 first 2 years).

Temporary Residence Working Visa: AUD150. for young people 18-25 years with no dependants, up to 30 years if you are from Canada, Japan, Rep. of Ireland, Rep. of Korea, Netherlands, United Kingdom, and easy to get if you from these countries. Valid for 12 months, some restrictions on work and study.

Arrange when buying ticket from 50 paticipating airlines or from travel agents. Also from Visa offices at some Embassies. Available to citizens of USA, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, South Korea, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, Belgium, Greece, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, Italy,Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Malta, Iceland, Monaco, Andorra, France, Spain and The Vatican, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Customs:
Tax free import of 1250 ml of alcohol, 250 cigarettes (250 grams tobacco), and AUD$400 of goods which have been purchased duty free. Australian Customs are vigilant in looking for drugs, foodstuff, animal products, plant matter etc. You might get searched if you arrive from australia/Thailand/Laos etc.
Warnings:
Generally a safe country. Hitchhiking is less common now. There have been a few female travellers murdered while hitchiking in the last few years.
Poisonous snakes and spiders do exist, bites are quite rare. Ask local people about the area you are in. Occassional shark attacks on surfers and swimmers. Some northern beaches have stinging jellyfish at certain times of the year.
Be terribly careful with FIRE if in the countyside. Australian bushfires are ferocious and have killed and destroyed many times.
Accomodation:
From 5-Star to backpackers is almost everywhere. Backpackers start around AUD10 per person, an average one-star motel is around AUD40-60 double. Quality hotels are more like AUD120 to thousands per day.
There are many quality resorts, mainly in the north (Queensland, Barrier Reef Islands etc.), but also in the remote west and wild Tasmania.
In the holiday season (Jan-Feb) many Australians go to Caravan Parks, usually near a beach. An On-site Van is a cheap alternative and you can get terrific locations. If you have hired a MotorHome you can pull in and plug in, use the showers etc.
If travelling broke, it is legal to camp on Crown Land away from towns, i.e. roadsides, forest areas etc. Pitch a tent, light a fire and settle down. Observe Fire Restrictions in the Summer season, and regulations in National Parks. Camping out used to be an Australian tradition and is still a popular romance.
Events: Annual Gay & Lesbian Mardi-Gras in Sydney. Formula 1 Grand Prix in Melbourne. Each city and town will usually have an annual festival or show of some sort, e.g. the Gympie Muster (Qld), Ballarat Begonia festival (Vic), Moomba in Melbourne, Comedy Festival (Melb), WOMAD world music adelaide, Jacaranda Queen (Griffith), Birdsville Races (N.T.), Henley-on Todd (Alice Springs), Port Fairy Folk Festival (Victoria).

Attractions:
Sun, Sand and Surf. Desert, Mountains and snow. And even a bit of Culture.
Australia's attraction is its huge variety of places and people. Combined with a relaxed informal lifestyle.

Coming & Going:
AIR. International airports at Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Cairns, Darwin, Perth, Adelaide & Hobart. Domestic airports all over the country.
Getting Around:
AIR. Internal flights go almost everywhere, though fares are not cheap. Remember its a 4 hour flight from the East to the West and North to South. QANTAS has a virtual monopoly with only VIRGIN BLUE providing some competition.
The cheapest Qantas way is the 21 day advance tickets.
Sample prices ex-Melbourne Round Trip would be
Adelaide AUD249, Alice Springs-Ayers Rock AUD559, Brisbane AUD399, Cairns AUD589, Darwin AUD729, Perth AUD499, Sydney AUD239
There is now some competition the main routes. VIRGIN BLUE have started a price war with Internet bookings. Prices can change quickly.
There are regional Airlines which service some smaller towns
BUS. Aircon Coaches are cheap and go everywhere.
RAIL. Main cities and some towns are served.
The main national links are Adelaide-Melbourne-Sydney-Brisbane and Sydney-Adelaide-Perth (a 3 day trip)
CAR. Rental from major and minor companies at airports, cities and towns.
Popular travellers thing is to buy an old car for the duration of their stay, and sell it when leaving, which works out a lot cheaper. Petrol (Gas) costs 90-100 Aus cents per Litre (or more in remote places).

Many Backpackers buy an old car or van for their stay and sell it or just give it away when leaving. A 15-20 year old vehicle is cheap (AUD $800 plus) and usually functional and fairly reliable.
Hitchhiking. Women alone should not do this, a 1% risk is not worth taking. Having said that, male and female together is probably 99% safe.
