Burmese Language [Bama Zaga]
the hard bit, even when you can hear it!
1st rule : if you are trying to speak burmese and can't make yourself understood. say it as fast as you can, you might be surprised.
reading the romanised translations you tend to pronounce every letter, when a lot of them are actually not heard or are very short. good example is the money unit, the kyat is pronounced 'chat' with the 't' abbreviated [almost not heard].
if you have Flash Player plug-in in your browser
Knowing the numbers is the most useful skill you can have.
Combine it with beh-lauq-leh [how much?] and a lot of your conversation is taken care of.
how to say it. Do not say the bits in [brackets].
0. thoun-nya 'thown-nya', 'thrown' without the'r',short 'a'.
1. tiq as in 'ti[ck]' but do not pronounce "ck'.
2. hniq as in 'knick' but do not pronounce last 'ck'.
3. thoun as 'th[r]own'
4. lei as 'lay'
5. nga as 'nar', do not say 'g' like a 'y',this means 'fish'
6. c'auq as 'chow' short 'ow'
7. k'un-hniq as 'cou[ld]-kni[ck]'
8. shiq as 'shit' but do not pronounce last t.
9. ko as in exclamation 'koh!'
10. ta-s'eh as 'ta-say' short a.
tiq & hniq become ta' & hna' when a 0 is added, see 100, 200,1000 etc.
