  TIPS.
Accomodation:
From backpackers Guesthouses to the new 4 star Hotel Max. Prices range from US$4-150. Cheapest room in a beachside hotel is US$6 per person, including breakfast, for a small two bed room with basic bathroom and toilet. Always try to negotiate, especially mid-week. Myanmar people pay about half what foreigners pay.
In the Myanmar summer time (March-May) the beach can be fully booked out.
Prices are in US$. For payment US$, FEC and Kyat are usually accepted.
A few hotels accept Myanmar Credit Cards. None accept foreign credit cards.
Behaviour: Myanmar people being very modest, most wear shorts and t-shirt for swimming. A few one piece swimsuits may be seen. Very brief swimsuits/bikini style etc will look very out of place. This is not Phuket.
Around the Beach:
Hpokkla Kyaun (Island pron."chorn") has a monastery at the top, home to only three monks. Good view of surrounding area. There a fishing village or two on the island. Cross over the narrow inlet by boat (1100 Kyat).

White Sand Island ( Thay Phyu Kyaun) is a tiny dot with about two trees, one km offshore, hire a boat to go there from where the road ends at the inlet as well.

The Village is an interesting stroll or bike ride. The tourist restaurants and shops are all close to the main road. The main village road goes all the way to the estuary/river (U Do Chaung), the final part has houses built over muddy mangroves.Boat and propeller repairs are done down there. A few schools, a hospital, post office, monastery and Pagoda are the main things.

Ngwe Saung (Silver Beach) is a new beach development a bit south. About half way from the ferry crossing to Chaungtha there is a road that goes there. Two more upmarket resorts have been built there. But seem to be having difficulty getting tourists to go there (well, it ain't easy!). Prices unknown, probably US$20-40 range.

BUS. Rough Bus, no Aircon. To/from Yangon (Rangoon) is about 3500 Kyat (US$3.50) and takes 8 hours approx. Leaves from the Hsinmalaik Highway Bus Station (out past the Airport) at 4:30 am, not the Bus Station before the Airport (Zaw Bwagyi Zone). One Lunch stop, and short stop at Pathein Bus Station. . Return to Yangon leaves at 6:30am, picks up from the Hotels.

From Pathein-Yangon buses leave from the Yinsuntan Bus Station from 5am until about noon.
Chaungtha From/To Pathein: About 3 hours by Bus. From the Bus Station at approx. 7am and 11am (or 1pm. check it). Price not sure, probably Kyat equivalent of about one US$.
Buses and trucks go from Chaungtha to Pathein at 7am and 11am from the Bus Station, and 1pm from the Bus Stop in the village.
Breakdowns and "Tyre Breaks" are common. Even the occassional Bus on fire.
The road from Yangon is good until about an hour from Pathein. The road has been improved recently and a new bridge over the river means no more ferry crossing.

A very rough, dusty, winding and hilly road (35km), partly "sealed" takes 1.5 - 2 hours to get you to Chaungtha Beach from the river.
Some scenic jungle areas at 300 metres said to contain wild monkeys, elephants and even leopards.Wild elephants were seen recently about an hour from Chaungtha.

BOAT: From Yangon to Pathein. Three decker boats leave from the Lan Thit Jetty in Yangon, daily at 3 and 5pm, arriving at Pathein in the morning. Ordinary class (second deck) is US$9. Aircon cabin on top deck is US$33 per person. Buy tickets at the office next to building 63 on the Jetty. Older boats for Myanmar people only do the same trip.

AIR: Nearest Airstrip is at Pathein. Bagan Airways fly Yangon-Pathein.

Getting Around:
You can walk everywhere if not in a hurry. Bicycles can be hired from many places along the beach for 200Kyat per hour. There is no public bus service, trishaws or taxis (not neccessary).
Electricity:
Mains electricity runs to the beach but is turned off by the government because there is not enough to go around. So there is no mains power. All hotels turn on their generators from about 6pm-6am. A few provide a few hours in the middle of the day for aircon rooms.
