Kyaik Hti Yo (Kyaiktiyo) is the top of the mountain, Kyaikto is the town at the bottom. This sacred little stupa on top of the gilded rock ranks alongside the Schwedagon, the Mahamuni and the Schwezigon in importance. many Burmese make special pilgrimage trips to this site. Legend says the rock stays balanced on the edge by virtue of a hair of the Buddha beneath it. Its considered an especially good place to make a wish. Males can buy some gold leaf (K100) and apply it to the rock.

  TIPS.

.
Arriving:When you finally arrive from Yangon, keep a close watch for a large truck that takes takes people about half way (30 mins) The restaurant where the Yangon bus stops has rest rooms and showers free of charge if you have a meal.

Going Up: Then you walk the rest of the way (made road) about 1 hour plus, get porters to take your bags, its hot and steep. There are even sedan chairs carried by two men for those who are infirm or lazy.

For the fit adventurers you can avoid the roads and take the old tracks through villages etc. This is described by Thomas at www.goldenlandpages.com , its a long walk (5 hours).

For some Government reason foreigners cannot take the trucks to and from the very top that the Burmese do.
The big surprise is that there is a virtual town at the top. Many shops. restaurants, lodgings etc. Well worth a walk around in the evening.

The big plus for staying at the top is the evening time and the sunrise in the morning, mist in the valleys below, and mountain ranges receding to Thailand. It was a Burmese holiday when I was there, in the evening with the setting sun a group of students sat around looking over the valley and sang songs for hours. Very nice.

If you are Burmese there are heaps of dormitories and shacks at the top to stay in.

Buses: from Rangoon Highway Bus Centre, K1000 (about 5 hours) From Bago, K60?.
But the return Bus dropped us at a Bus Station somewhere in the west of Yangon, so be prepared for that.
