  TIPS.
Accomodation:
From cheapish Resorts to luxurious and expensive ones. Try to negotiate, especially mid-week . Prices drop about 30% in the rainy season. Myanmar people pay about half what foreigners pay.
In the Myanmar summer time (March-May) the budget resorts can be fully booked.
Cheapest and grubby with not much beach is the Grand Hotel at the far North end, quotes $15 double so negotiate hard.
Some choices from $25-80 then jump to $100 plus plus.
Prices are in US$. For payment US$, and Kyat are usually accepted.
A few hotels accept Myanmar Credit Cards. None accept foreign credit cards.

Behaviour: Myanmar people being very modest, most wear shorts and t-shirt for swimming. A few one piece swimsuits may be seen. Though this is more a tourist style beach than Chaungtha Beach, less Myanmar come here because its hard or expensive to get here and rooms are much more expensive. Bikini swimsuits and bare chested males are not so out of place here.
Around the Beach:
There is not a lot to see apart from the beach. There is quite an extensive village area over the road and down past the beach. Fishing boats go out at sunset and use lights all night long to attract the fish. Up to 50 boats can be seen on the horizon at night.

At the South end is the tiny Pleasant View Islet, really a rocky outcrop, with a basic restaurant and a good view up the beach, its a very pleasant walk along the excellent clean sand. The bigger Pearl Island (Balee Kyaun) is not accessible to foreigners. The now deceased leader General Ne Win used to fly in by helicopter for a few days holiday to this island.

You can do boat trips out around the few islands. Not that a tourist would, but its apparently potentially dangerous further out to sea, getting into the Bay of Bengal and nearer Bangladesh there can be strong winds.

GOLF: A nine hole golf course is between the beach and the airport.

If you want your own resort there is 2 acres of beachfront land for sale at the South end, $15 million !! Prices here have skyrocketed in the last few years since the Government stopped controlling the beach, they no longer run any resort, everything is privately owned.

With 3 new large resorts currently being built (Feb. 2005) the beachside will be fully developed soon. A new school is being built behind Laguna Lodge, I guess by a developer who will donate it in exchange for the current beachfront school land, a shame really, what a magic location to go to school, running along the beach at recess, watching the sea from the classroom.

  FACTS.
Telephone Info: Country code=95. Area Code= 043. then the 5 digit phone number.
Coming & Going:
Book a day in advance at least. Buses are usually full.

BUS. To/from Yangon (Rangoon) is about 6000 Kyat (US$6.60) and takes 15 hours approx. to Thandwe. Old non-aircon bus, not a coach. Two companies do the trip, Ye Aung Lan Express is one. Leaves from the Aung Mingalar Bus Station (way out past the airport) at 4:00 pm.

If you book by phone make sure you get there 2 hours earlier to pay for the ticket or it will be sold to someone else. Goes via Pyay ("Pee"), then the road gets bad and slow.
Take a pick-up or tuk-tuk from Thandwe to Ngapali Beach, (1500-3000 Kyat, 16 KM).
Have been told by a local you can go another way up the Mandalay road and then across to Pyay, maybe a better way to get to Pyay but not a direct bus route.
Note: It can get quite cold at night in the hilly section from Thandwe to Pyay, have a jacket handy.
There are at least 3 very annoying passport/ID card checkpoints on the road.

Breakdowns and "Tyre Breaks" are common. From Yangon the first third of the road is just OK, the next third gets bad then before Pyay and all the way to Thandwe it's a dirt road, very bumpy and dusty and slow.

BOAT: No information, sorry..might be possible, would take a very long time though.

AIR: Daily flights to Thandwe. US$70 one way, $140 (approx) return on Air Bagan, a new local Airline. 50,000 Kyat return for Myanmar people. Air Mandalay has daily flights and Yangon Airways goes there too. Cost does not vary much between them. 50 minutes flying time approx.

Getting Around:
You can walk everywhere if not in a hurry.
Bicycles can be hired from the resorts.
There are no trishaws or taxis (not neccessary).
A public pick-up truck service goes up and down the road to Thandwe.
Weather:
Not as hot as you might expect in the cool season, being a bit North.
A brisk onshore sea breeze arrives every afternoon.
The nights are pleasant, just a little bit cool but no sweater needed.
Electricity:
A fluctuating Mains electricity is only turned on from 6-10 pm.
The more expensive resorts have 24 hour supply from their own generators.
