Xieng Khuang Province
Coming & Going:
Planes to/from Vientiane daily (US$37, 40 mins). To/from Luang Prabang 3 times a week (US$31, 35 mins). Lao Aviation office in town (tel: 103) open daily.
By road: is possible. changing buses and starting early is neccessary. From Luang Prabang allow 2 days, stopping overnight at Nam Noen. To/from Sam Nuea at least 12 hours.
Facts: the capital is Phonsavan, a small basic town, airstrip, shops, market and a few government buildings.
Money: No banks for foreigners.
US$1 gets 9992 Kip as at June 2009
Communication: there are phones.
Climate: moderate year round temperatures,because of altitude, not too wet in rainy season.
Attractions:
The Plain of Jars is a large area extending around Phonsavan from the southwest to the northeast where huge jars of unknown origin are scattered about in over a dozen groupings. There are three main sites available to visit, with site 1 the closest and containing the most jars.

The jars weigh as much as six tonnes (6.6 tons) and have been fashioned from solid stone, which doesn't seem to have come from the area. Many of the smaller jars have been taken away by collectors, but there are still several hundred in the five major groups. Thong Hai Hin, the biggest and most accessible site, has two pavilions and toilets, as well as the largest jar on the plain.
The main town is at Thong Hai Hin.
Tham Piu : a cave where almost 400 local people were killed by a rocket strike in 1969. A few klm from Muang Kham, 33 klm east of Phonsavan. Hot Springs nearby. Pleasant journey through the countryside. take a bus to Nong Haet and get off at the Tham Piu turnoff, you can walk from there.
Muang Khun : the old capital of Xieng Khuang. bombed and abandoned in the war, Now a plain town, with a few old temples. get there by bus from Phonsavan, 36 klm; 1000kip.There is a hotel (2000kip)
Geography: high mountains and green valleys
History: Heavily bombed during Vietnam war.
Medical: pot luck or bring your own.

Coming & Going:
SAM NEUA :by AIR. Sam Neua to/from Vientiane 3 times a week (US$67, 1+ hours)
by ROAD. from Phonsavan, route 6, change buses at Nam Noen, each leg about 6 hours and 2500kip. From Nambak (Luang Prabang Province) and from Muang Xai ( Udomxai province) is also possible.
VIENG XAI : 29 Klm from Sam Neua, about an hour on a bus.
Money: no banks
Communication: some phones
Climate: moderate because of the elevation.
Attractions: not many. local textiles and mixture of ethnic groups, Lao, Vietnamese, Hmong and others.
Geography: Situated in the remote mountainous north-east, closer and more accessible to Hanoi than Vientiane. 1200 metres above sea level.
History: Vieng Xai was the headquarters of the Lao People's Party during the Vietnam war. There are many caves, used by the Pathet Lao during the war.

Bokeo Province Houay Xai
Coming & Going:
Huay Xai to/from Thailand, a short ferry ride across the Mekong River from Chiang Khong. Houay Xai is a proper entry point for Laos, normal visa is all you need.
Feb 2003: Visa on Arrival at Houay Xai. You can now get a 15 day Visa on arrival at the Immigration Office on the riverside at Houay Xai. Cross from Chiang Kong (Thailand) on the boat (20 Baht). One photo and US$30 / 1500 Baht. Currency exchange office is nearby as well. Get to the Slow Boat pier by Tuk-Tuk (20 Baht/5000 Kip). fare to Pak Beng is 65,000 Kip, to Luang Prabang is 130,000 Kip. Insurance for the boat trip is available for 100 Baht but is not compulsory.
Thai Visa on Arrival available at Chiang Kong
AIR: Huay Xai to/from Luang Prabang daily (US$36, 50mins). Also once a week from Luang Nam Tha (US$36) and Udomxai (US$34).
BOAT: Long distance ferries to Pakbeng (4000kip) and Luang Prabang (8000kip). The same by speedboat is about 400Baht and 800Baht. Landing is about 2 Klm south of town.
ROAD: Passenger trucks to Luang Nam Tha, 217Klm, 8000kip, about 10 hours.

Climate: moderate to cool
Attractions: Busy riverside town. Shan style Temple, Wat Jawm Khao Manilat, overlooking the town.
Geography: On the border with Thailand and close to laos. Over thirty ethnic groups.
