Savannakhet Province
Savannakhet town (also known as Muang Khantabuli), population 45,000.
is across the Mekong River from Mukdahan, Thailand and is a busy trade area between Thailand and Vietnam.
Coming & Going:
AIR: to/from Vientiane daily by Lao Aviation, (US$61, 1 hour).
ROAD: to/from Vientiane. Bus, 7000kip, 12 hours. To/from Pakse, 2500kip, 6 hours.
Savannakhet is a legal entry point for all nationalities. Laos Visa required in advance.
Ferry across the Mekong (30Baht) (Savannakhet-Mukdahan) weekdays and half Saturday.
To/from Lao Bao (Vietnam). daily bus, 2800kip, about 12 hours, 200Klm. Lao Bao is a legal entry point for Vietnam.
Leaves 5am. Rough gravel road, slow going.
To/from Da Nang (Vietnam).
Visas: Vietnamese Consulate in Savannakhet and also in Pakse.

Attractions: That Ing Hang (Temple), 12Klm north, get there by bus.
The most sacred in South Laos, thought to be built in 16th century.
Full moon festival in February or March.
Ho Chi Minh Trail. Network of tracks and roads used by the
North Vietnamese/Viet Minh to fight the French and then the American allies.
About 170 Klm east to the town of Sepon is about where it starts.
The Lao Bao to Savannakhet bus stops at Sepon.

Salavan Province
Main town is Salavan on the Bolaven Plateau.
Mild pleasant climate due to the elevation. Mon/Khmer peoples.
Coming & Going: To/from Pakse by passenger truck (1500kip, about 2 hours)
Sometimes Lao Aviation might have flights.

Champasak Province • Pakse
Area population of about 160,00. Pakse town is on the junction of the
Mekong and Se Don rivers, established by the french in 1905.
Shopping: Handwoven silks & cottons.
Coming & Going:
AIR:To/from Vientiane daily on Lao Aviation (US$90, 90mins)
ROAD:To/from Vientiane by Bus (11000kip,18 hours)
To/from Savannakhet, twice daily (3200kip,4-6 hours)
To/from Salavan by Bus.
Pakse is the base for visiting Champasak and the Temple ruins of Wat Phu
Money: Cash US$ or Thai Baht can be changed at the BCEL near the market.

Town of 20,000 people on the Mekong river. Old French Colonial feel.
Coming & Going:
Usually a day trip from Pakse, take a bus to Ban Muang (about 30Klm),
a ferry across the river and a bus to Champasak or Wat Phu (8Klm further).
Or hire a taxi in Champasak for a round trip to Wat Phu (about 6000kip).
Attractions:
Wat Phu. A Khmer temple from Angkor period. Mix of Hindu and Buddhist motifs. Big full moon festival in February.
Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands)
Bordering Cambodia, the Mekong spreads out to about 14Klm.
Many islands are inhabited, the villagers leading a quiet river based life.
Coming & Going:
AIR: Lao Aviation fly to the airstrip on Don Khong (Island),
maybe twice a week if there are enough bookings (US$26).
ROAD: To/from Pakse by Passenger Truck (1000kip,6 hours) goes to Muang Khong town on Don Khong.
BOAT: if the river is high enough, to/from Pakse by ferry is possible (2000kip)
