This small scenic town is becoming increasingly popular for a very relaxed stay.
Often filled with backpackers and Lao people from Vientiane having a holiday break.

WARNINGS:
Feb 08, 2003 Report. A gang of around 20 possibly Hmong rebels shot up a convoy of buses, pick-ups and cyclists just 4km north of Vang Vieng on Route 13. Killing 2 westerners, a chinese male and at least 7 Lao people, dozens were also wounded. The two westerners appeared to be on a cycling tour.
First incident for a long time on what has been safe recently, it was previously a dangerous road to travel.
Coming & Going:
Bus. To and from Vientiane about 3-4 hours.
5:30, 6:00, 6:30, 13:00, 14:30
Pick-Up to Vientiane every 15 min til 14:00
North to Luang Prabang at 8:30am approx. 40,000Kip, about 7-9 hours.
Bus breakdowns are common. Overnight stays in the middle of nowhere are possible.
Getting Around:
Hire a bicycle, 6-12,000 Kip per day.
Motorbike Hire 80,000 Kip per day.
Local operators run trips to the caves and up the river for floating down on inner-tubes. 5000 Kip per trip.
Shopping:
Not much. One ordinary local market.
Money:
No ATM's. One real Bank (Lao Bank) probably will change money, not sure about Cashing Trav. Checks. Take Kip or US$.
Accomodation: Many Backpackers Guest Houses. A couple of better quality "resorts" on the riverside.
$7 gets you a Bungalow on the River. Basic rooms are 20,000Kip
Entertainment: A few bars for after dark drinks. Plenty of restaurants.
The makeshift restaurant on the river bank across the footbridge is popular for sunbathing and lazing around to the sounds of cool music.
Health : A very basic hospital.

Communications: Some slow internet cafes. Phone works, international might be difficult.
Geography: Flat around the town then the mountains go straight up.
Attractions:
Floating down the river on large inner-tubes is the number one activity. Deep caves for exploring. Steep mountains. Some local Tour operators offer trips to the caves and other places.
Climate:
Warm in the day to cool at night in the cool season (Dec-Feb).
