Penang is an island off the northern part of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is also the name of the Malaysian state which is made up of Penang Island and the facing strip of territory on the mainland called Seberang.

COMING & GOING:
TRAIN: The station (Tel: 3237962 for reservations) is next to the Ferry Terminal in Butterworth. Also Railway Booking Office inside the Ferry Terminal (Tel: 2610290) for reservations.
To Kuala Lumpur at 7:50am,3:20pm and 9:00pm. The 7:50am goes on to Singapore arriving at 9:50pm. (RM60/34 2nd/3rd Class).
The International Express to Hat Yai And Bangkok departs 2:10pm arriving Bangkok 11am next day.

BUS: The main Bus Terminal is in Butterworth next to the Train and Ferry stations. Alor Setar (RM5), Ipoh (RM10), Kuala Perlis (RM7), Lumput (RM10), Kuala Lumpur (RM20), Melaka (RM26), Johor bahru/Singapore (Rm36-42).
Also some from Komtar (Georgetown). Several Daily to Kuala Lumpur. Daily to Kota Bharu and Kuala Terengganu. Two daily to the Cameron Highlands (8am, 3pm. RM15). Advisable to buy your ticket at the station, avoid agents.
Private Minibuses go to Hat Yai (RM20), Surat Thani (RM28), Krabi (RM30), Phuket (RM38-43) and Bangkok (RM80). Most services are not direct, so you have transfers and waiting times.

The 13km Penang Bridge , south of Butterworth, connects the island to the mainland.
Ferry still operates from the mainland to the island if you don't want to go across the bridge. 60 sen per person, RM7 for cars, open 24 hours.
There is also a rail link across the bridge..

AIR: Bayan Lepas International Airport is 20 km from Georgetown (the capital). The fare to Georgetown is RM19 (by buying a coupon). A No.83 bus goes from Lebuh China and Pengkalan Weld.

International Departure Tax is RM40. Except Singapore and Brunei are RM20.
Flights to: Hong Kong (Malaysia Airlines). Medan. Singapore. Kuala Lumpur. Hat Yai, Phuket, Bangkok (Thai Airways International).

GETTING AROUND:
BUS: Plenty of buses around town and out to the beaches.
Taxis. may not use their meters, negotiate price first. eg. Georgetown to Batu Ferringhi RM20, Penang Hill RM8.
Motorbike hire is available, RM20-25 per day.
Bicycle, most hotels hire them.
Trishaw for around town. Fix the price first.

BOAT: The Kuala Perlis-Langkawi Ferry Service (KPLFS Tel: 262 5630) and Ekspres Bahagia (tel: 263 1943) on The Esplanade go to Medan (Sumatra), 5 hours, RM96 one way RM166 return. Lands at Belawan and continues by Bus to Medan. Daily 9am except Sunday.
Langkawi Ferry Services (in Penang Tourist Association office tel: 264 2088) goes to medan as well, faster and cheaper, (RM90/160 3.5 hours). Leaves every second day 8am.
All these also go to Pulau Langkawi from Georgetown, at 8am. daily. (RM35 one way RM60 return, 3.5 hours). Returning from Langkawi at 5:30pm.

Warnings:
Heroin is a common drug in the area. Possession of more than 15 grams of any illegal drug carries the death penalty.

Post Office has Poste Restante and Telekom office is open 24 hours for phone calls.

Penang Tourist Association office is on Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah. tel. 2816665.
Tourism Malaysia is in the same building.

Accomodation:
Cheap hotels area is on Lebuh Chulia area and between the Ferry Pier and Chinatown in Georgetown. Jalan Penang has numerous more expensive hotels.
There are budget guesthouses as well as quality resorts at the beaches.
Climate:
The rainy season is from about from April-May and October-November on the West Coast Peninsular Malaysia. (November to February on the East Coast Peninsular Malaysia, Western Sarawak and North-East Sabah.)
Attractions:
Fort Cornwallis and the nearby Penang Museum. Penang Hill rises 830 metres above Georgetown provides an excellent view and cooler temperatures with added interest of a Mosque, Hindu Temple, a park, a cafe and a hotel.
Geography:
Penang is the island and a small strip of coast on the peninsular called Seberang Prai. A 13.5 klm bridge links the two. Georgetown (on the island) is the main centre and the nearest point to the peninsular.
Batu Ferringhi (Foreigner's Rock) is the best beach area and has most of the Resort Hotels.
History:
Established as the first British trading port in the Far East in 1786
