Tioman Island (Pulau Tioman):
The largest of a group of 64 volcanic islands, about 80km from Mersing. Tropical island with good beaches (39kmx12km). Used by Hollywood as the island Bali Hai in South Pacific. Main beaches are Air Batang, Salang and Juara. Salang is the most crowded and more active at night. Nipah is accessible only by boat from Mersing. prices range from RM10-50 for basic floor space to medium Chalets. Some 3-4 star is available. Kampung Tekek is the main town (includes airport).

Coming & Going:
AIR. to/from Singapore (daily, RM132). To/from Kuala Lumpur on Air Pelangi(4 a day, RM125), Kuantan (daily, RM77). Booking office is in the Berjaya Tioman Beach Resort.
ROAD & FERRY trip from Johor Bahru to Mersing (138 km, 2 hours). Ferries (3 hours) and Hydrofoil (1.5 hours, RM25) across to Tioman are plentiful. Also from Tanjong Gemok (38 km north of Mersing, 2.5 hours, RM25, twice daily). To/from Singapore-Hydrofoil (4.5 hours, Sing$79, daily).
Getting Around: Sea Bus ferries go to Tekek, Air Batang, Salang and Juara.

Sibu Island (Pulau Sibu):
In Johor State, about 100km from Johor Bahru.Quite large and popular and developed island for underwater stuff and trekking. Coral reefs, shipwrecks, jungle trails and swamps. Range of resorts, but mostly a bit upmarket. Fast boats from Tanjung Sedili take about 90 mins. Most resorts operate boats from Tanjung Leman to the Island (12km). Also boats from Mersing.
Kuantan:
In the middle of the East Coast, capital of Pahang State.

Attractions:
Teluk Chempedak Beach, about 4 km from town centre.
Sultan Ahmed I Mosque, Jalan Mahkota
Cherating Beach, about 47 km north of Kuantan. popular with travellers for its beach life and for exploring the surrounding areas.
Beserah Beach: 7km north of Kuantan. Fishing, Handcrafts and cottage industries. Cheap accomodation available.
Balok Beach: 15km north. Watersports, Windsurfing. Coral Beach Resort is the biggest.
Chendor Beach: 2km from Cherating. Secluded beach, home to Green Turtles in July-Sept who come ashore to lay eggs.
Lanjut Beach: in Rompin, 118km south of Kuantan. Beach activities, Scuba Diving, golf at Lanjut Golden Beach Golf Resort. 65km to the Endau-Rompin State Park, pristine rainforest jungle.

Coming & Going:
AIR. MAS goes to Singapore (RM146, daily), Kuching (RM233, once a week), Kuala Lumpur (RM74, daily). Pelangi Air goes to Pulau Tioman (RM77, daily).
BUS. From Kuantan main Bus Station - to Kuala Lumpur (RM11, 3 hours) - to Johor Bahru (RM16, 5 hours) - to Singapore (RM16, 7 hours) - to Cherating (RM2.5, 1 hour) No.27 Kemamam Bus.
TAXI. can be taken to Pekan, Mersing, Kemaman, Cherating, Kuala Terrengganu, Kota Bharu, Temerloh, Jerantut, Raub & KL.
Cameron Highlands:
In Pahang State in the centre of the peninsular, at 1829 metres elevation, it is cooler and very fertile. Supplying vegetables to Malaysia and Singapore, also many tea planatations, waterfalls. Three main towns are Ringlet, Tanah Rata and Brinchang. Brinchang has a busy market and a public golf course. Most hotels are in Tanah Rata, Brinchang has some cheap places.

Coming & Going:
ROAD. 240 km from KL, 60 km from Tapah. From the Kuala Lumpur-Ipoh road, turn off at Tapah (about 3.5 hours). BUS. fare Tapah-Tanah Rata RM3.5. From Tanah Rata to KL (5 hours, RM10), to Penang (6 hours, RM14). Shared Taxis can also be arranged.

Kota Bharu:
The most north-eastern state of Kelantan, bordering Thailand, has its capital as Kota Bharu with various beaches close-by, including Pantai Cahaya Bulan (10 km), Pantai Dasar Sabak (13 km), Kuala Besar (15 km), Pantai Irama (25 km), Pantai Bisikan bayu (50 km) and Pantai Seri Tujuh (7 km north). A very popular transit point for travellers going overland to/from Thailand (often used to renew Thai visa). The main rail line to Bangkok passes close by.
