Langkawi:
Is the main island of a large group at the very north-west tip of Peninsular Malaysia, 30 km from the coastal town of Kuala Perlis. Popular resort Hotel location and has duty free status, being so close to Thailand. November to February is the busiest (like Thailand), prices are lower in quiet times.Most popular area is Pantai Cenang and is relatively expensive. Pantai Cok is quieter and cheaper and has a better beach.

AIR. MAS from Penang (RM51) and Kuala Lumpur (RM135) and Singapore (RM200).
BOAT. to/from Kuala Perlis (1 hour, RM10, 8am-6pm), Kuala Kedah and Kuala Lumpur. From the Kuah Jetty (Langkawi) to Satun (Thailand), 3 times daily, RM15.

Melaka (Malacca):
With a history going back to the 15th century alliance with the Chinese Emperor and subsequent Portuguese, Dutch and English occupation, Melaka was an important trading port for a long time. Presently its a quiet town, but the Chinese and colonial influences make it very interesting.

BUS. to/from Kuala Lumpur (3.5 hours, RM6.5), Singapore (5 hours, RM11.5), Johor Bahru, Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu and Kota Bahru.
BOAT. to/from Dumai (Sumatra) daily fast ferry (2.5 hours, RM80). Across the Strait of Malacca, Indonesia Visa on arrival.
TAXI. to Port Dickson, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Mersing.
Johor Bahru:
s the capital of Johor State, the southern most point of the Peninsular, is mainly a link to Singapore via the 1km causeway.

Buses and taxis. Going all the time across to Singapore, and to all main destinations in the Peninsular. Boat. there are ferries to Batam and Bintan islands (Indonesia) leaving from Pasir Gudang (30km from JB).
