CHIANG MAI is the largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand, and is the capital of Chiang Mai Province. It is located some 700 km north of Bangkok, among some of the highest mountains in the country. The city stands on the Ping river, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya river.

Coming & Going :
Bus. Aircon and non-aircon buses leave Bangkok's Northern Bus Terminal (near Mo Chit Skytrain Station and the Underground, Chatuchak) frequently (tel. 02-2725242, 725299). Also private coaches e.g. Bancha Tours (tel.02-2510587) and Chaisit Tours (tel. 02-2784880) have fares from Baht 270.
Train. 11-13 hours from Bangkok, Hua Lamphong Station.
Air. One hour on Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways from Bangkok.
The airport is International.
Tiger Airways (Singapore) have cheap flights (1500 Baht) to/from Singapore.
Air Mandalay. To Mandalay on Thursdays and Yangon (Rangoon) on Sundays.
Silk Air. To/from Singapore are expensive (10,000 Baht return).
Getting Around :
Around town by Buses, Pedicabs and Songthaew. Motorcycle and car hire available from local and international companies.
Easy going city, the only busy bit is the road that follows the canal around the old city area. The main areas of interest are within walking distance.
Shopping :
Nearby villages specialise in Antiques reproduction, Bamboo goods, Basketry, Cotton, Paper, Pottery, Umbrella painting and Woodcarving.
The Night Market. on Chang Khlan Rd. 6pm - midnight every day. Array of crafts, clothes and leathergoods and food of course.
Money :
All Thai banks have branches. 8:30-3:30pm. and exchange booths open till 8pm. Plenty of ATM machines.

Geography:
Chiang Mai is 700 km by road from Bangkok in the far north of Thailand, covering an area of 20,000 square km's. It is the second largest city in Thailand. Founded by King Mengrai in 1259, the Kingdom was called Lanna Thai which maintained independance for a long time, finally coming under the control of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya and then the Burmese. In 1774 King Taksin drove out the Burmese and Chiang Mai has been a province of Thailand since.
Events :
The Flower Carnival, on the first Friday to Sunday of February.
Songkran is on 13-15 April. The traditional New Year celebration of religious pilgrimages, dancing, beauty pageants and water throwing.
Yee Peng (Loy Kratong) is on the full moon day of the 12th lunar month (usually mid-november). Traditional purification ceremony when people float banana leaf boats carrying candles onto the rivers and lakes under the full moon, to honour the water spirits and float away the past year's sins.

Attractions:
Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, in the Amphoe Mae Rim area, covering 262 sq.km's. Office is on the Doi Suthep road near Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.
Huai Kaeo Waterfalls. Near Chiang Mai Zoo, 6km's from town.
Wat Phra Borommathat Doi Suthep. Large golden pagoda built by king Gue-Na in 1383 and said to contain relics of the Buddha.
Hmong tribal village, about half-hour drive from Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep.
Mae Klang Waterfalls. 58 km's on Chiang Mai-Hod Rd. (km 8 on Highway No.1009
Doi Inthanont National Park. 1000 sq.km's of natural beauty. Take Chiang Mai-Hot road (No.108) turn off at Km.57 onto Highway No.1009 and go 48 km's to the top of Doi Inthanon.
Wachirathan Waterfalls. on the road to Doi Inthanont, 30 mins from Namtok Mae Klang.
Mae Sa waterfalls. at km.7 on the Mae Rim-Smoeng road.
Paddle the Ping. Canoes for hire to explore via the river.
Mountain Bike Madness. Ride down Doi Suthep, variety of different grade routes.
Climate:
Cool season (average temp. 21ºC) is late October to early February. Rainy Season is from June to October (av.temp. 25ºC). Hot Season is from March to May (av.temp. 29.9ºC).
