MAP
Ko Chang is in Trat Province, in Eastern Thailand, about 330 kilometers from Bangkok. It is Thailand's third largest island, and the biggest in Ko Chang National Park. With about 5000 permanent residents the island is not heavily populated, but tourism (and development) has increased dramatically over the last few years.

Alternately take a run down to the Hat Lek-Koh Khong border. Visas available for Thailand and Cambodia on the spot.
Coming & Going :
AIR:Bangkok Airways flies three times a day from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport to Trat.
Direct door-to-door minibus transfers from Trat airport to Ko Chang resorts cost 280 baht/person including the ferry crossing.
From Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, take the free express shuttle bus from outside the arrivals concourse to the airport's own bus terminal,
and from there the next available bus to either Trat or Chanthaburi, then proceed as described below.

Ferry: From Laem Ngop pier on the hour until mid afternoon. About an hour and a bit.
Docks at the top of the island. Take taxi to the beach you want. There is also a car ferry.
From Trat to Laem Ngop pier is just 20km, get a pick-up (songthaew) from the main street near the market.

Bus. Trat to Bangkok 4 times a day. Two companies do the trip. Baht 280
To Hat Lek for Cambodia. Most people go at 6am on mini-bus from Trat to try to make the 8am ferry from Koh Khong to Sihanoukville.
Often this is not enough time if you get held up at the border crossing, often by many locals going in and out for the day.
From Bangkok: Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai), Baht 280 approx, about 6 times a day.
From Khao San Rd, mini-buses run straight to Laem Ngop pier for ferry to Koh Chang, see a travel agent in Khao San Rd.
There are direct minibus services to Laem Ngop from Pattaya and Ban Phe
Getting Around :
On the island by taxi-truck (Songthaew), not cheap and not too frequent, you might wait an hour for one to come by. Thai people on holiday might pick you up on the road.
Ferries to Koh Chang leave from Laem Ngop pier. Taxi-trucks go to the pier at least hourly from the main street of Trat near the market, Baht 20, 20 klm. See map for the many ferry routes to the local islands.
Orientation:
The main beaches on Koh Chang are all on the East coast and are from North to South Hat Sai Khao (White Sand Beach)

Klong Prao, Kai Bae and Hat Ta Nam (Lonely Beach) There is also a beach past the village of Bang Ban in the Southwest of the island and a couple of others including Long Beach in the far southeast.
All of the beaches are in an attractive setting.
White Sand Beach has the most development and entertainment.
Khlong Pro and Kai Bae have fewer resorts but still have quite a few restaurants/bars etc.

Hat Ta Nam (Lonely Beach) while not that lonely any more is quieter and more remote.
Other than development at the beaches mentioned above there are several villages on the island that are worth a visit.
Khlong Son is the first village reached on the drive to the beaches from the ferry arrival points. Parts of the village are built over the sea in an attractive bay.

Bang Bao is another photogenic village built out into the bay on stilts. There are several small restaurants noted for their fresh seafood and amazingly, there are are a couple of snooker halls over the water where you can try your luck against the local professionals. Many of the fishing boats employ illegal Cambodians, they do not like to be photographed, be polite and ask.

In the far south west of the island a long way from the most developed areas and resorts is the village Salak Phet, also noted for good seafood.

Shopping :
Take stuff with you, it might be hard to find and/or expensive eg. insect repellant, cigarettes, toiletries, batteries, film etc. Some clothing shops at the main beaches - White Sand, Kai Bae.
Money : No banks or ATM's. Take it with you.
Entertainment: Not much. A few bars. Most people just hang out in the resort restaurant or on the beach. White Sand Beach and Kai Bae are the most "developed" with shops and restaurants/bars.
Health :
MALARIA: does exist in a small way, mostly in the rainy season. Use repellant of course. There don't seem to a lot of mosquitos around in the cool season.

Small hospital just south of mainland ferry pier (Tel: 039-521657). Also small medical clinics at White Sand Beach, Khlong Son, Kai Bae and Khlong Prao.

Warnings: Riding a motorbike on the narrow road with its deep ruts on the side can be dangerous when a taxi pickup truck comes at you. It will not slowdown or give you room. Get off the road when you hear one !!
Police: A few police boxes. See map.

Diving and Snorkeling.
There are some excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities around Koh Chang
The diving in the area is primarily at reasonably shallow depths with good reefs located at 5 to 25 metres. Visibility can reach 30m but is variable depending on time and location - it generally is worse near to the full moon and better to the South of the islands.

Divng can be done year round but the best time to dive is between October and the end of May since rougher seas can during the rains can reduce visibility.
There are good reefs in the area with a variety of soft and hard corals includmg Massive, Columnar and Staghorn Corals. These support a range of tropical reef life including Blue Tippped Rays, Moray Eels, Trigger Fish, Grouper and Batfish.
Turties can be spotted and Whale Sharks are seen it the area from time to time.

The most unique diving opportunity in the region is what is probably the world's only Vertical Wreck. This is a gas tanker that has sunk at 90 degrees due to the remaining gas it holds. It descends from 5m to 60m and is home to a host of marine species - trips to the wreck can be arranged through any of the various dive operators on the island.

There are a series of dive sites offering good diving at 5-18m around the seamounts and small islands to the West of Koh Chang. These include Koh Man Tok and Hin Sam Sao.

The deeper dive sites are located off islands to the South of the archipelago. Hin Luk Bat has a lot of good coral and some good swim-throughs. Hin Raap is a deeper rocky site with good soft corals. Other good sites lie off Koh Rang.

The island currently has three dive operations. Koh Chang Divers are located at Bamboo on White Sands Beach. Eco Divers operate from Ban Pu on the same beach, whilst Sea Horse are located at Kai Bae.

The price for a two-day introduction to Scuba course is around 3000B whilst a full PADI certifieation costs around 10,000 Baht. Pleasure dives cost around 2000-3000B depending on site, for two dives with lunch. All other PADl courses are also available.

The beaches of Koh Chang themselves offer Iittle opportunity for snorkelling. Other islands the chain can be reached by snorkeling boat trips and there is sone excellent shallow reef for snorkelling at these sites. Additionally the dive shops will take snorkelers on their boats. Contact them for prices and details.

KOH MAAK
There are also two PADI dive schools on Koh Maak.
Lagona Divers based at Koh Maak resort and also Lazy days. both offer dive courses and pleasure diving.
Silver Windsurfer offer rental and lessons as well as hire canoes and archery equipment.
The smaller islands off Koh Maak have some resorts and can be reached fairly easily from Koh Maak.
They are Koh kahm, Koh Rayang Nok and Koh Kra Dad.
A daily boat goes to Koh Rayang Nok from Holiday Beach resort at 10am and returns at 4pm.

Koh Maak is an attractive low-lying island, 16 square Km in size. There are few hills and the island is widely cultivated with coconut and rubber plantations. The population is only about 500 people,so there is not much infrastructure. Electricity is only available from 5pm to midnight. The daily ferry from laem Ngop arrives at Ao Nid at the south of the island. resort people meet the ferry to offer free rides to their resorts. The daily boat from Bang Bao (Koh Chang) stops at the pier at the Koh Maak Resort.
There are good beaches to the North-west and North-east of the island where most of the resorts are located.

Climate:
Southeast Thailand has two seasons, a dry period from November to April and a wet seasom from may to October. Temperatures are coolest from November to March with daily maximums averaging 30 centigrade. In the wet season this can rise to the mid thirties.. It can rain heavily in the wet season but is not constant.

Many resorts on the outer islands close during the rains, but Koh Chang has many that stay open year round.
