  TIPS.   
Main Areas:
Patong. The biggest and busiest. Hundreds of resorts, restaurants, bars, clubs, shops etc. The cheapest accomadation is about B500 for a basic room with not much. From there it goes skyward.
Kata & Karon. South of Patong. Not so busy and a bit cheaper
Nai Han. On the south end of the island. Quiet. Cheaper bungalows.
Rawai. Smaller area but not cheap. Mostly resort developments.
Phuket Town. Old style Thai town. Largely untouched by the surrounding developments. Department stores, dentists, doctors etc.
Arriving:
In January-February the island is full, you haven't booked you will have a hassle to find a room. If you are on a private bus from the airport the driver will try to find one for you. Or leave you gear somewhere and hire a motorbike to look around.
Coming & Going:
AIR. Phuket Airport is full International.
To/from Bangkok, Hat Yai, Narathiwat, Nakhon Si Thamarat, Surat Thani on Thai Airways, one or more a day. Bangkok Airways and Angel Air also.

To/from Koh Samui daily on Bangkok Airways.
International destinations: Penang, Langkawi, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, Sydney, Europe

To/from Airport by Shuttle Bus from Phuket Town, Patong, Karon-Kata, about B100, the bus can be hard to find but a Taxi will cost about B400-600

ROAD: To/from Bangkok. from Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok, 5:30pm, 6:00pm and 6:50pm. About 12-14 hours overnight, cost range about B446-B690 depending on type of Bus.
To/from Phang-Nga about 2 hours, B50 approx.
To/from Krabi about 4 hours, B50-B100.
To/from Surat Thani about 7 hours, B150 plus.
To/from Nakhon Si Thamarat about 8 hours, B300 approx.
To/from Trang about 6 hours, B100 approx.

Getting Around:
Songthaews (pick-up truck taxis) travel all over the island at regular intervals for short or long trips, from B10 to B50. Motorbike hire is about B200 for a day.

Bargaining: is neccesary for just about everything. All tourists are rich.
Attractions:
Scuba diving is very popular, deep and shallow spots abound, coral walls, caves and wrecks can be found. There are many dive shops and boat rentals.
Deep-sea fishing, sea-canoeing, bungee-jumping, golf, horse riding, go-karts.
Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, this hilltop preserves the last of Phuket's virgin jungle. Guided treks are available.

Other places to visit include the Marine Biological Research Centre.
Phuket orchid Garden and Thai Village, for cultural shows, Thai boxing, elephant show, handcrafts (11am & 5pm shows, B230)
Butterfly Garden and Aquarium.

Crocodile World and Sea Aquarium. Naga Pearl Farm.
Gibbon Rehabilitation Centre, at Bangpae waterfall (7km from Two Heroines Monument, 10-4 daily).


Thai cooking classes, Herbal Saunas and Thai Massage.

And the Nightlife which is a mix of hundreds of girl bars, transvestite shows, pubs, restaurants etc, doesn't need describing, but does explain why some Thais don't respect foreigners (farangs).

Trips to the Phi Phi Islands (20km) are popular, see Phi Phi page. Phang Nga Bay is a day tour to see the limestone outcrops and fishing village built over the water on stilts.

The eight Similan Islands (160 kms north) are a pristine nature park and are largely uninhabited, a campsite is available on Miang, the largest island, popular with scuba-divers (Nov-April).

Wat Pra Nahng Sahng and Wat Pra Tong. The first Temple is famous for its image of the female Mahayana Bodhisavattva, the second for its buried gold Buddha image that the Temple was built around.

Events:
The Vegetarian Festival in October lasts nine days and ends in a parade through Phuket town.

21 km wide and 48 km long,Thailand's largest island. Interior is hilly with coconut plantations, forest, rubber plantations.
Linked to the mainland by a causeway. 867km south of Bangkok.

Climate:
Warm to hot all year round. Rain most likely between May - October. Average temps are 31ºC day and 24ºC at night.
