Visas:
Tourist Visa.
Valid for a single 30 day stay.
You can now enter and exit from any international border without having to state your entry and exit points.
There are four International Airpots and seven land crossings.
Official Visa fee is $25. Cost is from US$45-60 for an agency to get it.
About four days wait in Bangkok and Hong Kong and up to ten days from other places.You need your passport, 2 copies of the application forms, 2 passport-sized photos, and visa fee.

Business Visa:
Valid for three or six months and can be for multiple entries. Cost $40-100.
Working in Vietnam is permitted and they can be extended fairly easily.
Travel Agencies are the best way to get them as they organise a "sponsor" for you as well.
Its more trouble doing it yourself through an embassy.

Visa Extensions:
30 day extensions for US$30 are available. Travel Agents are best to do this in larger cities, Hanoi, Saigon, Hue,Danang.
Going to immigration office yourself might not work. One photo needed. It takes one to two days.

Customs:
On arrival in Vietnam, you must complete white and blue duplicate arrival-departure forms.
The blue copy is to be kept with your passport at all times.
Hotels, guest houses and private hosts must register overnight guests with the local police and these blue forms are essential for this purpose.

Incoming visitors must also fill out duplicate yellow and white customs declaration forms. v The yellow copy is to remain with your passport until departure. Do not lose it!
On the yellow and white Customs Forms you are expected to declare:
- Cameras, camcorders and other electric equipments not for personal use
- Currency: over US$3,000
- Jewellery: not for personal use
- Video tapes: (they may be kept for a few days and screened)
Duty free allowances are 200 cigarettes, two litres of alcohol, perfume and jewellery for personal use.

Viet:nam has strict laws on bringing anti-government literature, pornography, firearms and weapons into the country.
CDs and tapes are often retained for screening, but will be returned after a few days.
It is illegal to remove antiques from Vietnam.
When buying handicrafts, especially those that look old, ask the retailer for a receipt and declaration that the item may be exported.

In the United Kingdom the embassy is at 12-14 Victoria Road, London, W8 5RD, Tel (071) 9371912, Fax 8376108, cost 20-40 pounds.
In Bangkok a visa costs 1200 Baht (USD 60) and takes 4 to 5 working days.
It seems possible to get the visa at the embassy, and certainly at one of the many travel agencies.
In China, the Embassy at 32 Guangua Lu, Jianguomenwai Dajie, Beijing, Tel 5321125, 5325414.A visa costs USD 50 or CNY 440 (cash only!)
You will have to supply two applications with a photo each. You will also have to supply entry
and exit points, plus all the places you'd like to visit. The processing takes about one week
In Cambodia, Phnom Penh Embassy issues visas for USD 55 within one week. Changing the entrance point on a visa should cost USD 10.
Some travel agencies do it faster.

Money:
The currency is the Vietnamese Dong.
Exchange rate: 1 USD is around 16,299 VND .While it is illegal to import or export VND, other currencies up to
the amount of USD 3000 are free from declaration.
Travellers Cheques (in US$ is best) are easily changeable at banks and money changers all over the country.
You can get a cash advance on your credit card at Vietcom bank, 4% commission.
The Hongkong Bank in Ho Chi Minh City has an ATM.
Cash advances are possible with the major credit cards.
Many shops, upper-class restaurants and hotels now accept Visa, Eurocard/Mastercard and American Express.
It seems that Eurocard/Mastercard is the best choice.
Vietcombank supports Mastercard, with advertised cash advances at 0% commission. There is a 4% surcharge on Visa.
There is a Visa office in Ho Chi Minh City.
Warnings:
Pickpockets exist. Police can be looking for a bribe, though this is becoming less common.
Coming & Going:
AIR The main airports are Noi Bai (Hanoi) and Tan Son Nhat (Saigon)
Phnom Penh - Saigon. Siem Reap - Saigon. (Vietnam Airlines).
Saigon - Guangzhou direct, (China Southern Airlines).
Hong Kong to Hanoi and Saigon (Cathay Pacific and Vietnam Airlines).
Vientiane - Hanoi or Saigon on Lao Aviation.
Kuala Lumpur - Hanoi or Saigon (Malaysia Airlines and Vietnam Airlines).
Manila - Saigon or Hanoi (Vietnam Airlines).
Singapore - Saigon and connect to Hanoi (Singapore Airlines and Vietnam Airlines).
Bangkok - Saigon or Hanoi (Thai Airways, Air France and Vietnam Airlines).

(Ho Chi Minh City). There is a USD 8 departure tax on international flights.

LAND. To Cambodia. If you already have a Cambodian visa, entering from Vietnam by bus is the cheapest (US$12.00) way to get to Phnom Penh. Crossing the border at Moc Bai.
Another crossing is a bit lower down from Chau Doc to the border at Kaam Samnor. Boats go both ways Chau Doc - Phnom Penh on the river.

From Laos.Two crossings. Lao Bao (80km west of Dong Ha) and Cau Treo (80km from Vinh).
China. in the north-east at Dong Dang (20km north of Lang Son), Nanning in China is about 4 hours by road from here.
A twice weekly train Beijing-Hanoi goes this way.
Lao Cai to Hekou in the noth-west. A train goes from Hue to Kunming (Yunnan province, China). Lots of local trains terminate at LaoCai. Most people take the train, the road is not good.
Less used is the Mong Cai crossing in the north-east opposite Dongxing in China.

International dial code is 84.International phone calls are possible from many post offices.
Many post offices and hotels nowadays have a fax.

Internet is allowed in Vietnam since 1 December 1997.
Fees are: installation: VND 450000, duration fee: VND 400 per minute.
In addition, the telephone costs VND 130 per minute.
