General: the area covers the coast and mountains with terrific scenery.
Haiphong:
On the coast, the third largest city in Vietnam, not very exciting in itself, but is close to the popular Halong Bay and Cat Ba Island.

Coming & Going:
AIR: to/from Danang 3 times a week on Vietnam Airlines and Pacific Airlines.
BUS & TRAIN: only 100 km from Hanoi, easily reched in about three hours by train and bus.
Halong City & Bay:
A few km from Haiphong but plenty of places to stay.
"Hotel Alley" in Bai Chay has lots of hotels for around US$10-12 for a double room with bathroom and aircon.
About 3000 islands poking up into the Gulf of Tonkin, lots of little beaches and caves. v Boat trips are the go. Halong City is bisected by a bay, the west side (Bai Chay) is better for hotels and interest, the east side is called Hon Gai.
Coming & Going:
from Hanoi, 165 km trip by bus takes about five hours. Three day trips for about $25 and up.
Getting Around:
Boat hire is easy, from about $6 per hour for 12 person job.
All tourist boats are located at a marina 2km west of Bai Chay. Even helicopters are available.
Visitors come year round to the Bay, Feb-April can be cold (10c) and drizzling with rain with some fog and low visibility.
Tropical storms are common in the summer months.

Don Son Beach:
Pleasant and popular beach with palm trees, 21 km from Haiphong. Site of Vietnam's first Casino.
Cat Ba Island:
12,000 local population. Beautiful beaches, hills, cliffs, grottos etc.
The National Park is 17 km from the town. Half of the island and 90 sq. km of surrounding inshore waters were designated a National Park in 1986.
The type of eco-system found here is based on tropical evergreen forests, a coastal mangrove belt,
lakes, sandy seashores and off-shore coral reefs. In all, v the island has 350 hectares of forests and 250 hectares of primitive jungle.
Coming & Going:
133 km from Hanoi and 30 km east of Haiphong.
From Haiphong, 11am boat, $3, 3-4 hours. Returns to Haiphong 6am. v Private charter boats operate. Around the island motorbike hire is $5 per day. Organised Tours are available.
Cuc Phuong National Park
The Cuc Phuong forest is located 140 km South West from Hanoi.
This is one of primeval forests in Vietnam, which attracts a lot of tourists.
There are 64 species of fauna and nearly 2,000 species of flora including kinds of rare tree.

Anyone who loves nature will find that biological wonderland, will have plenty of offers.
This park is very popular with day trippers. It's an absolute Heaven for biologists spending a whole lifetime to inspect species of insects.
Actually, the Cuc Phuong national park is well-known place where biologists in many countries come to explore of animal and to inspect species of insects.

Tamdao National Park
Tamdao National park, is about 80 km northwest of Hanoi in the mountains of the same name in Vinh Phu province.
The town, which is essentially the Dalat of the North, was found by the French in 1907 and originally called "Cascade d'Argent".
At present, a few Westerners go to this region, but more are expected in the near future.
Hoalu
Formerly was the capital of Vietnam under the Dinh dynasty from 968 and the Early Le dynasty from 950 to 1009.
This is area covered of about 3 square km.
Being a famous place for magnificent grottoes, Hoa Lu is an attractive resort with many interests such as: sailing for sightseeing lots of grottoes, the ancient citadel.

Hoa Binh
Situated 74 km from Hanoi is the rest base for minority visits in the Muong Guest house at Hoa Binh.
There are many hill-tribes people such as Muong and Thai ethnic minorities.
Full day in Hoa Binh will be spent consisting of musical instrument.
Hoa Binh is also a mountainous area which visitors can enjoy climbing into.
Lao Cai:
Right on the Chinese border it is a busy place for travellers crossing the border to/from Kunming (Yunnan Province).
Hekou is the town on the Chinese side, accomodation is available here. The bridge crossing is open 8am-5pm.
Sapa:
370 km from Hanoi, 1600 metre up in a valley, cool climate produces fruits etc. January to June is fairly dry.
The Hoang Lien Mountains surround the area, including Fansipan, the highest in Vietnam, trekking is popular.

Sapa Coming & Going:
30 km from Lao Cai by Bus for $2. Tours from Hanoi for about $50 (4 days) are available.

To go to Sapa travelers take the train from Hanoi Station.
Arriving at the 290th milestone, it is Lao Cai station. Here travelers go nearly 40 km then come to Sa Pa.
The temperature ranging from 17 c to 23 c, in winter there is a fog or snows and the temperature may be below 0 c.
Sa Pa is the place to provide vegetable seeds,
precious medical plants, the forest here abounds deer, foxes, geckos partridges and also famous with Thac Bac (the silver Falls), Cau May (Cloud bridge).

Sapa North Vietnam
Dien Bien Phu:
Dien Bien Phu is a famous place for fierce battle between the Vietnamese People's army and the French army force.
That's historic battle of Vietnamese people as well as the people in the world.

Being about 492 km from Hanoi, Dien Bien Phu is also regarded as an attractive spot for people who like to discover the war's history.
Today, the site of the battle is marked by a small museum.
Visitors can visit Dien Bien Phu museum, HinLam hill, the French troops memorial, the Hamlets of the Black Thai and H'mong ethnic people..
Coming & Going:
AIR. to/from Hanoi 3 times a week on Vietnam Airlines.
ROAD. Roads are negotiable most of the time.
Independant travellers have done it on motorbikes.
There is a border crossing to Laos nearby, but it is not open to travellers.
